Butterfly Effect is the company behind Manus, a general-purpose AI agent that plans and carries out multi-step tasks such as research, data analysis, coding and web operations. Founded in Beijing in 2022 by Xiao Hong, it launched Manus in March 2025 and moved its headquarters to Singapore in mid-2025. Its other products include the AI assistant Monica and the personal agent app Cue. Meta acquired the company for about $2 billion in December 2025; in April 2026 China's National Development and Reform Commission blocked the deal and ordered it unwound. Earlier investors bought the company back from Meta for $2 billion in August 2026; Benchmark, previously the largest shareholder, did not take part, and Tencent took its stake to become the largest shareholder. Manus then resumed independent operations, and in October 2026 raised more than $500 million in a round co-led by Boyu Capital and IDG Capital.
