On October 9, TypeSafe AI announced an $870M Series A at a $7.5B post-money valuation, led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z). The same day, Microsoft released Microsoft-Decision-1 at exactly the price of TypeSafe's product Jev: $0.042 per million input tokens, with output free.
Jev is a "decision model". It does not write text. Give it a question and a set of options, and it returns a probability for each option, for judgments inside software such as ticket routing or invoice review.
$7.5B is at least a quarter below the valuation reported in talks two weeks earlier. In between, OpenAI, Amazon, Cloudflare and Microsoft all shipped rival products.

Comparison
TypeSafe's 24 days:
- Sep 15: $40M seed led by DCVC at roughly $200M (per Forbes); Jev launched around the same time.
- Sep 24: per The Information, in talks to raise more than $1B at a valuation above $10B (we logged these talks in Weekly #176).
- Sep 29: OpenAI previewed its Decisions API to selected customers at DevDay.
- Oct 1: Amazon AWS open-sourced Strands Decider 2B; Cloudflare launched Clef.
- Oct 6: OpenAI's Decisions API moved to public beta at $0.10 per million input tokens.
- Oct 9: Series A closed at 37.5x the seed valuation, with Sequoia and DCVC participating; a16z partner Martin Casado joined the board. Microsoft shipped a same-price product that day.

Since 2024, the SVTR AI Venture Database has six companies whose Series A was valued at $5B or more:
| Company | Series A announced | Valuation | What it sells |
|---|---|---|---|
| DeepSeek | 2026-06 | $56.3B | Frontier models |
| Fluidstack | 2026-07 | $7.5B | Data centers; part of Anthropic's $50B compute build-out |
| TypeSafe AI | 2026-10 | $7.5B | Decision models |
| XPENG Robotics | 2026-08 | $6.3B | Humanoid robots |
| Apptronik | 2026-02 | Over $5.5B (per Bloomberg) | Humanoid robots |
| River AI | 2026-08 | About $5B (as reported) | Training companies' own models; founded by xAI co-founder Igor Babuschkin |
SVTR's take
Four of the six sell something a rival cannot build within a month: frontier-scale training, data center contracts, humanoid robot production lines. TypeSafe is the only one that, while its round was still being negotiated, faced large companies shipping the same kind of product at the same price: four rivals within four weeks of Jev's launch, and Microsoft matched its price to the cent.
We think the gap between the reported $10B-plus and the final $7.5B is more likely a discount for being easy to copy. a16z and Sequoia saw these rivals and still closed at $7.5B. What they bought is the set of enterprise customers that wired Jev in first: once it sits in production systems, switching models means redoing integration and testing.
The other side: River AI sells model customization that large companies can also offer, and it still raised at about $5B, which suggests being copyable does not necessarily cap a valuation. The $10B figure was also a number reported from talks and never confirmed by the company; the gap could come from a smaller raise or different terms.
Two variables to watch next:
- OpenAI Decisions API pricing at general availability: it is now 2.4x Jev's price. If it drops to parity, Jev is left with only its early customers.
- Whether TypeSafe discloses a verifiable count of paying customers: the company says a third of the Fortune 500 use Jev, while a16z's investment note says 25%. Neither has explained the gap.
