METR (Model Evaluation & Threat Research) is a Berkeley, California nonprofit that grew out of ARC Evals, the evaluations team at the Alignment Research Center founded by Beth Barnes in 2022, and became an independent 501(c)(3) in December 2023. It studies the autonomous capabilities and catastrophic-risk potential of frontier AI agents, develops quantitative evaluation methods such as the task-completion time-horizon metric, and runs pre-deployment dangerous-capability evaluations with frontier labs including OpenAI, Anthropic and Google DeepMind.
