This Week's Briefing

This week's keyword in AI private markets isn't fundraising, it's exits and short bets. Oura, OpenAI, and SpaceX all filed for IPOs in the same week, with SpaceX valued at $1.75 trillion. In the same period, Leopold Aschenbrenner placed a $1.5 billion-plus short against Nvidia and other infrastructure leaders. Five acquisitions point in the same direction: foundation model companies are systematically absorbing the toolchain. And Andrej Karpathy joined Anthropic's pretraining team.

Capital heading for the exits, the stack consolidating, talent shifting sides: this week marks the first time AI venture has seen large-scale contrarian bets show up across all three at once.

I. Market Watch

This week's keyword in AI private markets isn't fundraising, it's exits and consolidation: Oura, OpenAI, and SpaceX all filed IPO paperwork in the same week; five strategic acquisitions clustered between toolchain companies and foundation model companies; Karpathy joined Anthropic; and Aschenbrenner placed a heavy short against AI infrastructure. The private market is closing up while the public market opens, and for the first time the industry is seeing large-scale contrarian bets from within.

1. IPOs and listings: AI and hard-tech unicorns sprint toward public markets in the same week

Oura confidentially filed for an IPO. The 11-year-old San Francisco wearables company, known for its health- and sleep-tracking smart ring, has annual sales approaching $2 billion and expects paid membership to top 5 million next year.

OpenAI plans to confidentially file a draft IPO prospectus this Friday. Q1 revenue was about $5.7 billion, roughly $1 billion ahead of Anthropic. But on an annualized basis, Anthropic has since overtaken OpenAI, running at roughly $45 billion versus OpenAI's roughly $30 billion, and Anthropic is on track for its first operating-profit quarter in Q2.

SpaceX is targeting a Nasdaq listing (ticker SPCX) at a valuation of roughly $1.75 trillion with a $75 billion raise, aiming to list on June 12 in what would be the largest IPO in US stock market history. Musk retains 85%+ of voting power through a dual-class share structure, and losses tied to xAI and orbital data centers are included in the disclosure scope.

SVTR take: Three companies filing in the same week opens the largest tech/AI listing window since 2021. SpaceX and OpenAI queuing up simultaneously reflects the same underlying fact: both the infrastructure layer and the model layer have reached the point where they must give their private-market LPs an exit path.

2. Active raises: defense AI and open-weight models both anchor at $5B+ valuations

SVTR take: Defense AI (Destinus) and an open-weight foundation model company (Zyphra) landed $5B+ valuations in the same stretch. Capital's willingness to pay for a "non-US OpenAI alternative" and for the "AMD compute path" is rising in parallel.

3. Strategic M&A: AI majors eating the toolchain from the top down

图片

SVTR take: This week's five deals all point the same way. Foundation model companies are systematically absorbing the middle layer, from developer tools (Stainless, Cursor) to retrieval (Contextual) to physical simulation (Emmi). The window for independent application-layer companies is closing fast.

4. VC fundraising: deep-tech GPs continue closing at moderate scale

Playground Global (Palo Alto, founded 10 years ago) closed its fourth fund at $475 million, covering compute architecture, semiconductor materials, energy, robotics, and quantum computing.

Boulder Ventures (Boulder, Colorado, founded 31 years ago) closed its ninth fund at $55 million, focused on early-stage tech, telecom, and biotech.

SVTR take: Both deep-tech GPs closed well below the size of the hottest AI funds. Established deep-tech firms are sticking to a "moderate size, disciplined" approach and staying out of the AI-themed fundraising arms race.

5. Worth watching: chip M&A, an AI short, and a marquee talent move

Early acquisition approach for Tenstorrent: The 10-year-old Santa Clara AI chip company, which has raised $1 billion-plus from Fidelity, Samsung, Hyundai, and Bezos among others, has reportedly drawn early acquisition interest from both Intel and Qualcomm.

Situational Awareness places a heavy short against AI infrastructure: The hedge fund run by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner disclosed a $1.5 billion-plus Nvidia put position, alongside multi-billion-dollar short positions built up against Oracle, Broadcom, AMD, TSMC, and ASML.

Andrej Karpathy joins Anthropic's pretraining team: The OpenAI co-founder and former Tesla AI lead started this week, reporting to Nick Joseph, tasked with "using Claude to accelerate large-scale pretraining research." The same day, Anthropic also brought on former Meta senior security engineer Chris Rohlf.

SVTR take: Karpathy choosing Anthropic, Aschenbrenner shorting AI infrastructure with size, and Tenstorrent drawing early acquisition interest: talent, capital, and chips all produced "directional bets" in the same week, and the directions don't all agree with each other.

II. Venture Read

This week's real signal isn't how fast AI agent companies' ARR is growing. It's that they're pulling money from a budget pool more than ten times the size of SaaS's.

III. Community

SVTR's community is highlighting an in-person roundtable for early-stage Bay Area founders: "Startup 101 Salon." Allen Liu will join the discussion alongside Chris Ma, founder of xNova VC Fund, and Linda Zhou, partner at K&L Gates, covering the questions first-time founders run into most often: fundraising, company formation, equity structure, legal compliance, and building an early team.

The session is best suited for founders in the early stages of building a company, preparing to raise, planning to incorporate in the US, or wanting to understand the Silicon Valley startup ecosystem.

SVTR is also collecting questions from community founders. If you're an early-stage founder with specific questions about fundraising, legal structure, or US incorporation, send them to us in advance and we'll try to bring them into the roundtable.

IV. Featured Content

On May 18, SVTR (Silicon Valley Technology Review) partnered with Zhiwai to host a closed-door lunch in Silicon Valley on "Chinese AI Brands Going Global," bringing together founders building brands, AI applications, cloud services, influencer marketing, e-commerce platforms, and hard-tech ventures on the US front lines, to discuss how Chinese founders can build global brands out of the US market.

Scott Wu, born in 1997, is co-founder and CEO of Cognition and a three-time IOI gold medalist. Cognition's Devin was the first AI software engineering agent to claim full autonomy. It launched in March 2024 with a 13% SWE-Bench score and drew heavy public criticism, then reached $445 million in ARR 18 months later. In July 2025 it acquired the AI coding IDE Windsurf in a 72-hour deal. It was valued at $10.2 billion in September 2025, and a new round being discussed in April 2026 values the company at roughly $25 billion.
